Use of osteopathic manipulative treatment with vaccination, antiviral therapy and chemoprophylaxis has the potential to save lives and reduce complications in patients with influenza. The author describes the role of osteopathic manipulative treatment for the management of influenza, draws historical parallels with the Spanish influenza of 1918-1919, and highlights current issues surrounding the use of antiviral therapy.
